Introduction

Project failures have become a common term that every project manager or business executive wants to separate themselves from. We tend to point the finger at one reason or the other being the cause of the failure. No one wants to take responsibility for the failure as it may tarnish their performance records. Would it? If it did, then most project managers and other managers would be in the hot seat for bad performance. As a matter of fact, you would be hard-pressed to find a project manager who has not had their fair share of project failures.

A study recently done by the Standish Group 2015 Chaos report (based on the criteria of on time, on budget with a satisfactory result for 50,000 projects around the world, ranging from tiny enhancements to massive systems re-engineering implementation) indicated that only 29% of all projects were successful, 52% were challenged, and 19% failed1. It is important to note that smaller and moderate sized projects, as well as those that took an agile approach, had a higher rate of success. Larger projects, on the other hand, had a very high rate of failure.

Additionally, based on PMI's 2016 Pulse of the Profession report, "organizations waste US$122 million for every US$1 billion invested due to poor project performance."2

These numbers are quite scary and beg the question: what is causing all these project failures? And why is it that project organizations just cant seem to get their arms around these failures and improve results? Is the problem tied to projects by nature? Or do PMs and their organizations have something to do with the outcome?

To answer the above question, we need to first understand what project failure is, then what contributes to project success or failure, and finally how we can attempt to eliminate or reduce project failure and increase the level of success.

What is Project Failure?

To state it simply, we can say that a project has failed if it did not meet its intended objectives. As stated above, the Standish Group in 2015 measured projects on being delivered on time, on budget with a satisfactory result. Projects are typically initiated to satisfy a business objective, which, in turn, could be part of a larger organizational strategy. At the same time, the project must also meet most stakeholder expectations. If the project can meet both the business objectives and all stakeholder expectations, then we can consider it a success. However, the picture is not as clear as we wish it could be. Most of the times, we do not have clear objectives (scope) to go by. In other instances, we work in a culture where stakeholders are constantly changing their expectations and adding more as the project progresses. Sometimes, perception plays a role. Consider a surgery where the surgical procedure is successful, but the patient still dies. Did the surgery fail? In the realm of projects, this might be a project that satisfies all the criteria of success but still carries the sense of failure because that's what people think it is. People in business have been saying "perceived" equals "real" for many years, and we cant change that.

So if stakeholders, business people, financial managers, end users, peers and superiors all think your project has failed, it surely has. Late projects, projects over budget, projects that don't deliver the business value they promise, and obviously projects that deliver the wrong productthese are all failed projects.

Project Success Contributors

According to the 2015 Standish Chaos report, the following are key factors (in order of importance) that contribute to a projects success:

Executive Support: by providing financial and emotional backing.

Emotional maturity: the teams behaviors, skills and the weakest link within.

User Involvement: in the project decision-making and information and requirements gathering process.

Optimization: improving business effectiveness and optimizing a collection of many small projects or major requirements. Optimization starts with managing scope based on relative business value.

Skilled staff: is highly proficient in the execution of the projects requirements and deliver of the project or product.

SAME is Standard Architectural Management Environment. The Standish Group defines SAME as a consistent group of integrated practices, services, and products for developing, implementing, and operating software applications.

Agile proficiency means that the agile team and the product owner are skilled in the agile process.

Modest execution is having a process with few moving parts, and those parts are automated and streamlined. It also means using project management tools sparingly and only a very few features.

Project management expertise is the application of knowledge, skills, and techniques to project activities in order to meet or exceed stakeholder expectations and produce value for the organization.

Clear Business Objectives is the understanding of all stakeholders and participants in the business purpose for executing the project. Clear Business Objectives could also mean the project is aligning to the organizations goals and strategy.

Causes of Project Failures

Here, we could easily state that lack of presence of the success factors above would lead to project failure by default. However, I am going to take a different approach and explain the causes the way I see them. This is because research on this topic will yield many results, and although there are many causes of project failure, I will focus on the most common, yet critical factors that result in project failure.

Organizational Culture This is at the heart of most project failures. Very few organizations have the infrastructure, education, training, or management discipline to bring projects to successful completion. Since the organization sets the company policies by which the project team will have to abide, a lack of knowledge about project management will result in lack of consideration for what projects need in order to succeed. The end result of this is inefficient authority systems and gaps in approval processes and weak support for the project team within the organization. The best solution is to look into creating and setting a Program Management Office (PMO) that can control the project management efforts centrally and provide the needed support for the project teams.

Inadequately Trained and/or Inexperienced Project Managers This is very wide spread, and especially in developing countries where business grew faster than the organizational infrastructure itself. So, we find companies that have grown to over 100 employees, with about 20 project managers who have taken on such roles from engineering or other departments. These project managers are clearly not prepared to handle projects that require intricate dependencies, planning, estimating and collaboration amongst project teams. They also lack the proper knowledge and certifications that should be expected for them to perform their tasks successfully. Professional training should be provided and, at a minimum, there should be a few PMP certified professionals amongst the team. This will ensure that they at least know what the best practices are.

Lack of Project Governance Organizations that grow from operational and functional to projectized can only succeed if they set the proper governance for their project management. Project Governance is the rules and regulations or standards under which projects function. It covers the mechanisms put in place to ensure compliance with those standards. Governance requires buy-in from senior management to empower PMOs and program managers so that policies can be enforced. Here again, a PMO would do a lot of good to bring projects into control.

Inadequate Tools and Methods - As many organizations grow, they tend to make do with what resources and processes they have in order to deal with project challenges. However, each resource may be working on a different wavelength and using different tools. This results in many documents being created, several procedures for the same task, and multiple software and manual tools being used to plan and estimate projects. Most of these software tools could be quite outdated and need to catch up with the times. A good start to repair this problem is to look to project management software solutions that the team can adopt.

Poor Requirements Management This should actually be almost at the top the list. Poor requirements management can be attributed to one out of each three project failures. Poor requirements gathering could mean that we either did not collect complete requirements or we left out some key stakeholders. This means that either we will deliver the wrong product, miss out some important features and functions that should have been there, have to make constant changes in the scope, or even drop the project once the true scope and feasibility is clear. Poor requirements are like a cancer that will most likely kill any projects chance of success. Additionally, proper program management must be in place so that related efforts are grouped into programs to gain the most benefits. Think about the money you deposit in a bank. The bank happily pays you interest from the day you deposit the money. And the longer you agree to leave it there, the higher the interest rate the bank is willing to pay. Did you every wonder why?

The answer lies in what the bank does with your money after you deposit it. You may say that the answer is very simple; they lend the money back out at a higher rate. That answer would be accurate but not complete. In fact, they do not just lend your money out. They effectively lend out up to TEN TIMES your deposit. They have the advantage of LEVERAGE. The reason for this is that the Federal Reserve Bank only requires banks to keep a portion of their loans in reserve; currently 10%. As the bank makes a loan, the loaned money is deposited back into the banking system and a new loan is made. This happens repeatedly until ten times the amount of the original deposit is loaned.

So the bank is very happy to pay the 2% interest on your loan when they will in effect be able to lend out ten times the amount at, say 6%. So on your $1,000 deposit, they pay you $20 and they earn $600. Not a bad return, considering they are using YOUR MONEY. Of course, the more the bank receives in deposits and the more loans it can make, the greater its returns and profit.

Now, there's absolutely nothing wrong or evil with the way banks make money. In fact, it is essential to an expanding economy for the banks to create money in the way they do. What most of us don't realize is that we can use the same principles to expand our own money supply. We simply have to apply these principles to our own investing.

What the bank does is use leverage, i.e., other people's money and velocity, continually moving that money, to continually expand their profit base. Individuals have the same opportunities but many of don't realize it. A simple example of compound interest can illustrate how individuals can use the bank's money to increase their own wealth and cash flow:

Suppose, for example, that an individual has $20,000 to invest. Most investment advisors would tell that individual to put the money in a mutual fund to receive the "high" returns of the stock market. So, let's suppose the investor follows that advice and invests the $20,000 in a mutual fund. Let's say also that the mutual fund does well and returns a 10% return every year for seven years and that all income from the mutual fund is reinvested at the same 10% rate.

At the end of seven years, the investor's $20,000 will have grown to $39,000, or almost double the original investment. Most investment advisors (and most investors) would be very happy with this return. In fact, it would be most unusual to do this well over a seven-year period given the stock market's fluctuations. This result is actually a demonstration of compound interest.

Now let's look at what happens if the investor instead uses leverage to increase the return on that $20,000 investment. For simplicity, let's use real estate for our example. We could use other investment vehicles, such as business activities or stock options, but we are all familiar with how leverage works in real estate.

If you love to write like I do, then why not put that love and talent to work for you and make some money. I'm not talking a little bit of money here. I'm talking just as much money as you can possibly make, depending on the quality of your work and how fast you can pump out papers.

With the current economic crisis I've had a terrible time finding a job, and I just graduated from college in December of 2008 with a degree in Psychology and Sociology, so I just assumed there would be a lot of jobs out there just waiting for me......

Well, I was wrong. After months and months of searching with no luck I decided to turn to the internet to see what I could find. I had heard of people writing papers online and making money while doing so, but I wasn't sure where to turn in order to find a legitimate company that would send me good assignments and most importantly, pay me!

I came across many sites that were hiring writers but they had stipulations that I didn't want to deal with. Some stated that you could write papers and submit them, but there was no guarantee that anyone would buy them. Others offered piddly income of 2-5 cents a word....these weren't even worth the time to sign up.

Then I came across a site that has been in business for 10 years. A company that supplies custom papers to students who don't have the time or desire to write their own work. Yes I know...you're thinking plagiarism here. Not on my end...I write all original content, the plagiarism aspect points toward the student who turns in the paper and doesn't state that it is not their own work!

Here is how it works; You have to apply to this company just as you would any job. They have a contract and writers agreement which you print off, fill out and send back to them, along with your resume and credentials. You must have at least a Bachelor's degree to even be considered.

Once they receive your application, they let you know if they accept or decline and you can start writing immediately. They have a website set up which lists all available assignments, due dates, pay, and all the information you need to property write the paper.

Most of the papers I have written are in APA format, but I've also done many in MLA, Turabian, Chicago, Harvard etc. So it helps to know how to format papers correctly. If you've never written in these styles before then it's going to be extremely difficult to work for this company. They are very strict on guidelines, formatting and turning the papers in on time!

I need to make it very clear that this is a full-time job when school is in session. Most of my papers are written for college student at all levels. I've written Masters and Doctorate level papers and entrance essays as well. The one downfall is, during the summer, the papers slow down to a crawl, but even right now, with very few classes in session, there are approximately 10 assignments on the board when I checked this morning.

Depending on how long the papers are and when they are due, you will get paid a minimum of 5 dollars per page with a maximum of 15 dollars a page, so you can see how this can become very profitable!

I started writing in February and since that time, I've written over 300 papers and have averaged $2000 a month! But let me point out that at times, I have had up to 6 papers in the works at one time. If you want to make a lot of money you are going to have to work very hard and write quality papers. If your papers are sent back for revision because they were not written correctly the first time, this cuts down on the money you will make due to the extra time to revise.

Also, if you write quality papers that are turned in on or before the deadline, clients will see that you are serious and request to have their papers written by you and only you. I have several clients who request my work every time they need something written. One of my biggest projects was a Power Point presentation for a Masters Degree program that paid over $500 dollars. Sure it was a lot of work but I got it finished in 3 days, earning me a little over $166 dollars a day. Pretty darn good if you ask me, especially for a work at home job with no expenses!

The bottom line here is; if you are serious about working at home and you love to write, you can make a terrific living writing papers for others. There are a lot of companies out there that offer this service, so do some checking and research before joining.

I would love to give you the name of this company but if I were to do that....I'd be cutting my nose off to spite my face! The fewer people who know about it, well, the more papers for me!!!
